Downline Retention in MLM
September 11th, 2008 | by Chris |A great issue for every network marketer involved in an MLM opportunity is that of the downline retention. How to keep the members in his organization from quitting. If someone works online the problem of keeping them for a long period of time involved in the business opportunity is even bigger, let alone motivating them to start doing the work and produce results in terms of recruiting and sales.
Some may go blaming the company, others the product, and many the people in their downline. The reality is that everything plays a part in the equation, but that’s not the point. The point is what you can do yourself when you are involved in a multilevel marketing company in order to decrease the chances of a new distributor in your downline to quit. Blaming others and looking for scapegoats never do you any good. What you should do is identify the problem and find solutions for it.
Matt Hellstrom from network marketing 4 today writes on his blog 6 ideas that can help you in that area in How Can I Keep My People From Dropping Out Of My Network Marketing Downline
First it breaks the downline in three types of people, retail customers that stay only for the products, leaders that they are a small minority in every MLM company, and the rest who are struggling to succeed which is the largest group with the more chances to quit.

That last group as a marketer is your job to educate and help them in order to stay in your organization. Matt gives 6 ideas on how to help them stay which analyzes with much more detail in his blog.
1. Choose a good company.
2. Sign them up with the most expensive option your company offers.
3. Show them how to monetize.
4. Get to know them.
5. Give them a plan.
6. Don’t pigeon-hole them.
Out of the 6 I want to stay at showing them how to monetize. It is true that the reason why most members may quit your downline is that they are not making any money. If you show them a way to start earning an income and they implemented and start making a profit almost none would have a reason to quit. Of course that doesn’t mean that you should stay only within the network marketing opportunity. As I wrote before and matt also mentions you should find additional ways to monetize your business.
You should primarily see yourself as a business that the MLM opportunity is only an aspect of it and a part of your income. Affiliate products, your own products, advertising, and other ways depending on the way you promote your business should also be used. It’s a new century and relying only in your company can greatly limit you these days and even hurt your chances to succeed.
